Passions and Interests
I have a number of interests and passions, both inside and outside of school. Educationally, I am fascinated by science and how the physical universe operates. In addition, I love learning about history, geography, government, and economics, as having a solid foundation in these subjects allows one the ability to understand current events much more clearly. Outside of school, I love to exercise daily, which includes running, swimming, and lifting weights. However, my greatest pursuit is in my sport of lacrosse which I play year-round, and have done so since I was in 2nd grade.
Looking at an object like an Extraterrestrial Assignment
Looking at an object like an Extraterrestrial - Flashlight
- How is it held?: Given the small yet elongated, round shape of the object it can reasonably be inferred that the object is supposed to be held in the human palm, single-handed.
- Is it a potential dangerous weapon?: The object does not appear to be a weapon of any kind as there are no mechanical implementations for projectiles to be fired, although it is fairly heavy and made of stainless steel.
- What is its main function?: Upon pressing the small rubber button on the back of the object a small beam of light was emitted from the front of the device.
- How powerful is the beam?: The beam is not strong enough to produce any form of heat damage, as it only produces visual light, so it again does not appear to be a laser weapon.
- Final hypothesis: Given that humans are severely limited in their inability to filter ambient lights through their ocular organs, it seems to be a device to produce enough light required for them to see while the Earth is in rotation facing away from the sun or in areas where levels of light are low.
Reflection: This assignment was interesting as it forced me to rethink how I interact with the world and what engineering is really about. Having to look at a device without invoking my previous experiences with it was hard but enlightening. In doing this I was provided with a brief window into the scientific method and how an alien might actually view Earth. This taught me how intricately engineers and scientists view the world and our surrounding universe.
